The Lake
Lake Tahoe is a freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada, located where the borders of the U.S. states of California and Nevada bend, near Carson City.
Approximately two-thirds of the shoreline is in California.
Lake Tahoe is one of the deepest (1645 feet), largest (192 sq. mi.), and highest (6229 feet elevation) lakes in the United States.
Lake Tahoe is 22 miles in length and 12 miles in width and covers a surface area of 191 square miles. Ths shoreline is 71 miles (with the California shoreline being 42 miles and the Nevada shoreline being 29 miles).
This amazing blue lake is so clear, that in some places objects can be seen to depths of 75 feet! The reason the lake is so blue is that the thin,
clear mountain air allows the lake's pure, crystalline water to reflect the blue sky above. The lake can also appear red during sunsets or gray-black during storms.
Lake Tahoe's Heritage
The first humans to enjoy the Lake Tahoe Basin were the Native American Indians--known as the Washoe.
The discovery of stone artifacts and projectile points confirms the Washoes presence 10,000 years ago.
They migrated each summer from the Carson Valley area seeking the cooler temperatures, abundant fish, and plentiful game of Lake Tahoe.
"Da-ow-a-ga" was the Washoe Indian name for Lake Tahoe. The Washoes considered "The
Jewel of the Sierra" the birthplace of their heritage.
Gisela’s Personal Views on Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe is an amazing experience for everyone who has the pleasure to visit
here and it is a privilege to live here. The beauty is overwhelming and the
energy exquisite. However people choose to enjoy the Lake, with all imaginable
outdoor activities—from week long hikes on the famous Rim Rail, to simple walks
along the Shores of the lake, to playing on the lake, or skiing at the Resorts
around the Lake—Tahoe touches all people in a wonderful way.
Lately it has become again the focus of some transformational Native American
ceremonies--bring back the sacredness of this magnificent place. Hopefully, the
coming together of healers and spiritual practitioners will make Lake Tahoe a
center of healing for all.
